do or die

March 31, 2008

Today after school I went to Fengshan 85 Market to have dinner with Lerping, Fiona and Sean. It was pleasant and we had a good chat about random things. Turns out Sean stays really near me, he drove me home! Thanks mate!

Armchair Critic is going to play at the Esplanade Powerhouse waterfront stage on May 2nd, Friday.

I have dreamed of this moment for the longest time.

- The first gig we ever played, when Terrance was still with us. Wayne Thunder was there, so was Gaffar, Egan, Sharan, Sherry, Sabrina. We embarrassed ourselves in front of all of you guys, but had wonderful spaghetti courtesy of the Gas Haus chef.

- Dunman Secondary’s Graduation, where we surprised Jeannette by actually getting her schoolmates’ approval with our performance. Seeing people like Cheryl and Jasmine.

- Auditioning at Ben & Jerry’s and fucking it up, and getting pissed off with the guy there. Who incidentally doesn’t work there anymore.

- Playing two gigs on the same day, just before Christmas. Watching Paul Twohill take forever to soundcheck. Playing Emo Kid, which Justin from The Suns said was our best song.

- The Invasion at Phunk Bar, where we had to sell 16 tickets at $16 dollars and actually managed to do it. Went for soundcheck way too early, and were thoroughly exhausted by the experience.

- The Uprisal @ L Cube, the first gig we ever organized. We actually made a little bit of money, and had a hell alot of fun. Boon getting pissed off because the bass drum pedal was faulty, and actually shifting his leg over to the other side and playing with the double pedal by the hi-hat.

- Rendezvous @ Gas Haus, which was a complete PR mess, but a big learning experience.

- Arts Day @ VJC, where we met Postbox for the first time. First gig which we played in the blazing mid-day sun, getting completely drenched in sweat.

- Eruption @ Honeytrapp, which Wayne Thunder attended. He declared that we had improved quite some bit since he last saw us, and promised to produce our EP when we were ready, and that meant alot to us. It was also The Fire Fight’s maiden gig, which I’m proud to say I’d organized.

- Somethingood Festival and the countless hours we busked in the middle of Orchard Road, in front of the Starbucks at Liat Towers.  We’d do it again at an instant.

Every studio we jammed at and had an attachment to- Ross at Bluetail, Nazri at Fourtones, Jane at L Cube, Elias at Zai, Razi at *scape.

The Festival of Love and Youth at Fort Canning Park, with that wonderful group of people. Losing the competition to the Indian band and sending everybody home in the back of my dad’s pickup truck.

Every late night we went home dejected because we were playing to nobody.
The couple of major conflicts we had that made us stronger and closer.

For the girlfriends we lost.

For our families who disapproved.

Crush at Top5 Disco, where we lost hundreds and hundreds of dollars organizing a bad gig.

Love Joy Music, when Boon couldn’t play along to the metronome initially and was so upset with himself for letting us down.

Ahmad selling his beloved guitar because the tone didn’t cut it in the context of our band.

The late nights jamming at Boon’s house, and the drinks downstairs.

All three of us working countless hours at Shangri-La to earn money to record the EP.

The countless days skipping school, getting MCs at Polyclinics and bumming around writing songs.

Watching gigs together, and being blown away.

Now, to do it justice.

only where i’m going

March 24, 2008

Today was a hectic but fun day! I was up late last night, so getting up early for school after a long, lazy Easter weekend was a bit of a drag. School was alright, I managed to get my Economics tutorial done and got up to date with filing and stuff.

I auditioned for TPJC Songfest with my original song Between The Lines. It was actually the first time I’ve properly played something on my own without Armchair Critic there, and it was a little bit unsettling and yet very empowering. Anyway the judges actually clapped, so I think I might have some chance of getting through to the next round! I was the first guy auditioning though, so I have no idea how good my competitors are.

After that, I met Sharan for Subway! Mmm. I love Subway.

Then I met up with Lerping to head down to Snakeweed Studios to hang out. Met Ben, Wesley, Joycelin, Leonard, 4/5ths of Electrico and Gabriel. Electrico was recording guitars for a new track, and it sounds really good! The bunch were really warm and fun to hang out with too, and I learnt quite a bit watching them get down to work.

Had really good fried rice afterwards, and a nice long cab home.

I like the Stereophonics! They’re coming to Singapore but I can’t afford it. I just got into them recently. Dakota and Maybe Tomorrow are such awesome songs! And I love 3 piece bands. Haha.

These past few days have been pleasant. Celebrated Mel’s and Po Liang’s 18th birthday at Simpang (which had Mel buying cigarettes from the petrol kiosk, which was a very funny scene)

Also been playing LAN with Ahmad, Jeannette, Po Liang and May. It’s been fun! I’m absolutely crap at both Dota and CS, though worse at Dota. Nevertheless, it’s been enjoyable. Apart from routinely having my Dota Hero ripped to shreds by Po Liang, repeatedly. Over and over again. Sigh.

I have to defer my NS again! I better do it now.

As I am typing this, Liverpool is having their ass handed to them 3-0. Damnit! Can’t you guys even draw? The future looks bleak for Arsenal. Why do you bring me up buttercup baby oh just to break me down…

Might actually stay up to catch the match. Go Gunners!

Shit I haven’t done my homework. Hahaha

I find it sad that when Levan Wee, one of the guys at the forefront of the battle for local music awareness put in so much effort to organize several concerts and do a massive compilation of local music, it goes generally ignored, but a tongue-in-cheek comic blog entry gets front page attention on The New Paper.

Juxtapose

March 18, 2008

I just stumbled upon this local band, and you gotta check them out!

They’re called Juxtapose, and they play, in their own words, jazzy rock funk disco house with a dash of sugar spice and every nice. Very sexy voice, and very sexy bass.

Can’t wait to catch them live.

Listen to Juxtapose at http://www.myspace.com/juxtaposeyou. Add them up and tell them I sent ya.

Absolutely brilliant.
